Opening Pandora's shoe box
For the Love of Hype is a four-episode podcast that sets off to discover the crazy world of sneakers and the rogue economics that governs it. You'll learn to walk the walk and talk the talk like a sneakerhead. In each episode, we’ll reveal a little bit about this world: from the people, to the lingo, to the prices, to how to get the best shoes.
Everyone has probably encountered the sneaker world at some point in their life. Maybe it’s your friend talking about those new Air Jordans, or a Youtuber saying he took an L. Or maybe you’ve just seen the word hype, unavoidable as it is sparkled across social media and the internet.

Have you ever wondered what this all means?

Episodes
Episode 1: Something in the Airs
If you think limited edition sneakers aren’t worth getting worked up about, think again. Your life could depend on it. A sneakerhead’s love for shoes toes the line between passion and addiction, driving many to do all sorts of crazy things to get their hands on the latest pair of kicks.

In the first episode of For the Love of Hype, Lizete gives you a beginner’s guide to the lingo, lifestyle and love embedded in sneakerhead culture, and helps you dive into the mind of a sneakerhead. She speaks to Josh Dunn and Ashish Ponugupati, two sneakerheads who share the lengths they’re willing to go to for the love of shoes.

Episode 2: Sneakernomics
The sneaker market is like the art market: second-hand is more expensive. It’s also unlike anything else you’ve ever seen before. Sneakers are stories that come with a price tag. A price tag so big it has investment banks researching it. A price tag so puzzling it has some glued to its graph as if it were Bitcoin.

A price tag we’ll decipher in this episode.

Today on For the Love of Hype, Irina speaks to Dylan Dittrich, an American investment analyst and sneakerhead who’s written a book on the sneaker economy. We learn about supply and demand, then watch them in action. How do trust and stories enter the price equation? Is this a bubble that’s about to burst?
Episode 3: Game Time
Today's sneaker world wouldn't exist without online raffles. They’re the way to get those shoes people'd sell their soul for - at their normal retail price.

But don’t be fooled, you don't win anything for free. When you enter an online sneaker raffle you are only competing for a chance, for access. Say that again?!

In today’s episode of For the Love of Hype, Isabella explains the stakes of the sneaker raffle game. She’ll guide you through where these online raffles came from, how they work and why they matter. We'll hear from Erik Fagerlind, co-founder and CEO of retail store Sneakersnstuff, and major sneakerhead Jake Willard. We also try to score a pair of shoes ourselves. Do we win and get rich or do we fail gloriously?

Episode 4: The Market's Dirty Little Secret
You’ve reached the end and it's time for the big reveal: What is the secret force disrupting the sneaker market? What has so negatively impacted raffles that some sneakerheads are even considering leaving the shoe hustle? Well, it’s definitely not Air Jordans.

In the final episode of For the Love of Hype, Hannah explores how technology has changing the raffle game to favor those with the cold hard cash to bend the rules. She talks to Erik Fagerlind, co-founder and CEO of retail store Sneakersnstuff, about how shoe companies are fighting this seemingly unbeatable opponent.

As the resale market becomes less and less attainable, we also learn from sneakerhead Jake Willard about why those trying to buy the hottest sneakers won’t stop chasing an unachievable goal. But is it all worth it in the end? Will the bubble ever burst? And most importantly, does it live up to the hype?
